In nutrition, diet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism. The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management reasons (with the two often being related). Although humans are omnivores, each culture and each person holds some food preferences or some food taboos. This may be due to personal tastes or ethical reasons. Individual dietary choices may be more or less healthy.

Complete nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat-containing food, also food energy in the form of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity.

There are thousands of diets. Some are for losing weight, while others are for gaining weight, lowering cholesterol, living a long and healthful life, and many other reasons.

A diet is best described as a fixed plan of eating and drinking where the type and amount of food are planned out in order to achieve weight loss or follow a particular lifestyle.

Here are some diets that are popular in the community

1. Mediterranean diet
The emphasis is on lots of plant foods, fresh fruits as dessert, beans, nuts, whole grains, seeds, olive oil as the main source of dietary fats. Cheese and yogurts are the main dairy foods. The diet also includes moderate amounts of fish and poultry, up to about four eggs per week, small amounts of red meat, and low to moderate amounts of wine.

2. Raw food diet
The raw food diet, or raw foodism, involves consuming foods and drinks that are not processed, are completely plant-based, and ideally organic.

3. Vegan diet
Veganism is more of a way of life and a philosophy than a diet. A vegan does not eat anything that is animal-based, including eggs, dairy, and honey. Vegans do not usually adopt veganism just for health reasons, but also for environmental, ethical, and compassionate reasons.

4. Vegetarian diet
The majority of vegetarians are lacto-ovo vegetarians, in other words, they do not eat animal-based foods, except for eggs, dairy, and honey.

Studies over the last few years have shown that vegetarians have a lower body weight, suffer less from diseases, and typically have a longer life expectancy than people who eat meat.

5. Ketogenic diet
The ketogenic diet has been used for decades as a treatment for epilepsy and is also being explored for other uses. It involves reducing carbohydrate intake and upping fat intake. It sounds contrary to common sense, but it allows the body to burn fat as a fuel, rather than carbohydrates.

6. Atkins diet
The Atkins diet, or Atkins nutritional approach, focuses on controlling the levels of insulin in the body through a low-carbohydrate diet.

If people consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates, their insulin levels rise and fall rapidly. Rising insulin levels trigger the body to store energy from the food that is consumed, making it less likely that the body will use stored fat as a source of energy.

Therefore, people on the Atkins diet avoid carbohydrates but can eat as much protein and fat as they like.
Although popular for some time, the Atkins Diet comes with certain risks. Individuals considering the Atkins Diet should speak with their doctor.

A healthy diet may improve or maintain optimal health. In developed countries, affluence enables unconstrained caloric intake and possibly inappropriate food choices.

Health agencies recommend that people maintain a normal weight by limiting consumption of energy-dense foods and sugary drinks, eating plant-based food, limiting consumption of red and processed meat, and limiting alcohol intake.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is an evidence-based information source that policy makers and health professionals use to advise the general public about healthy nutrition.

  1. Yes yes yes, please I would love to hear your experience with symptoms you now know were insulin resistance, would like to compare with what I might have overlooked. I was put on metformin years ago, BC blood glucose high, I weaned off and controlling with diet, and letting my body re regulate.

  3. I needed this video!!
    I tried Leto for about 6 weeks and actually lost weight- which was like a miracle. But I fell off the wagon hard over Christmas and haven’t been able to get myself to start again ( even though I really want to in my head)
    This has helped me to set a day and go for it!!
    It’s the only thing that has actually helped me lose any weight, even a very healthy diet – gets me nowhere

  4. Keto for me is a natural way to calorie restrict without feeling hungry. When I restrict fat I feel unsatisfied. That is how I have lost weight. Also, my knees feel so much better. I found keto after a doctor visit (doctor didn't tell me I had to do my own research) when my glucose was a little high. I suspect I am insulin resistant but have not had it tested. Went back to the doctor the next year and was down 40 pounds and my doctor said she was insulin resistant and doing keto.

  6. You are an amazing inspiration. My daughter is 19. She is autistic and very obese. She is never satisfied and full when she eats. I do think its part of her disability. I am keto for 2 years. I am not over weight , I just like the way of eating. I really want to try this way of eating on my daughter. She will sneak foods as soon as you walk out the kitchen. But she desperately needs something. However, my husband doesn't want me to do it. He feels its going to be too difficult. I am gonna give it a shot.

  7. One of the biggest (and there are many) disappointments of the healthcare system is the lack of routine testing for insulin resistance. Insulin levels are too high for roughly 10-20 years before pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes actually manifest. It makes me sick to think of how many cases of diabetes and diabetes-related complications, not to mention obesity, could be eliminated if we'd stop using glucose levels as the end-all, be-all diabetes/health marker and start testing insulin levels! My background is in public health, and I'm a certified Diabetes Educator and Diabetes Prevention Counselor and they don't teach this stuff at school (and I only finished school 5 years ago so we can't even blame it on a lack of available research at the time). Let me get off my soapbox, lol. I know now that I have likely been insulin-resistant for almost my entire life, which sounds dramatic but is true, and I'm just so thankful to have found keto before I was clinically diagnosed with diabetes. The insulin-resistance I've always had, combined with my strong family history of the condition, and my previously terrible dietary habits were a perfect recipe for the development of diabetes, heart disease and a myriad of other negative health outcomes I'm trying to avoid. Keto saved my life, yours, and can save so many others if people will just LISTEN and do their research and give this lifestyle a try. I'm so proud of you and happy for all that you've accomplished!And also, thank you for sharing your story! It is my hope that someone will hear it and make the decision to save his/her own life!

  10. I’m struggling to be completely keto but I am on a low carb diet and have lost 30lbs along with intermittent fasting I’ve never thought I could even lose that amount of weight. I’m leaning more towards keto can’t wait till your free to keto guide. ❤️

  11. Kim, have you gotten any blood work done after you started keto? Do you have any concerns about your cholesterol levels with eating such a high fat diet? Do you see keto as being a long term diet that you stick with or are you doing it as a short term? I know that a lot of insulin resistance problems can be cured with weight loss. What are your thoughts?

  12. I started keto January 5th and even though I have not lost as much weight as some of the other people that I know, ( that started around the same time)I feel so much better! I'm not hungry my stomach issues have disappeared. I'm looking forward to losing the weight as well! Thanks 4 sharing!

  13. Keto has changed my life!! I started May 2018 & have lost 30lbs so far. I was prediabetic & also have PCOS, so I tend to lose weight slower than some. The health benefits from this lifestyle is what keeps me going. Before keto, I had reflux all the time, anxiety issues, allergies, constant migraines, & zero energy. I'm now off all of my medications (5 total). I only have reflux now if I eat something that isn't keto friendly (which is rare). My anxiety is almost nonexistent, my cycle has almost completely regulated itself, I rarely have migraines, & my "seasonal" allergies have disappeared. Keto is definitely worth a try!!

  14. Yay Keto! I have been pursuing the keto diet since December…I have only lost about 8lbs, but that was with adding fat and doing intermittent fasting, getting the carbs down has been challenging. I will say that those 8lbs came right off my mid section which was noticable! Congrats to you!

I get upset with myself when I see people dropping so much faster than I am, but not in a jealous way. I am seeing a functional medicine Dr for hormones now because I know that is a huge problem. Keto had almost turned around menopausal symptoms completely but still having a few hormonal issues. Again thank you for just sharing. It is encouraging

  20. Yup that's me omg it's like just my life story . I am 50 years old married for 27 years and have two beautiful sons. I gave up sugar 17 years ago when I had my second son. All these years I been eating healthy but still over weight. Finally I realized it that the carbs is the problem . My hormones are off like crazy . My doctor always talks about range lol. I am so glad my niece graduate from medical school two years ago so now she will be working on my hormones 😁😁😁. Love all your videos thanks ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hey – I lost 25 lbs. on Keto before Christmas, looked great and more importantly – felt great..  Unfortunately, I went to visit a friend for Christmas and got very sick, was in the hospital or15 days and in rehab.  Came home a month ago and just concentrated on getting better.  I'm ready to get back on Keto full force and would love to join this group.  However, I have tried and just can't get in.  Please help!
