(28 Jan 2019) China’s foreign ministry said that the dismissal of Canada’s ambassador to the country is an internal affair.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fired Ambassador John McCallum after the envoy said it would be “great” if the US dropped its extradition request for a Chinese Huawei executive arrested in Canada.
“What you mentioned is Canada’s internal affair, we have no comment on it,” said Geng Shuang, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson at Monday’s new conference.
He added that the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the founder of Huawei Technologies Ltd, is “absolutely not a simple judicial case.”
China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor 10 days after Meng’s arrest on allegations that they were “engaging in activities that endanger the national security” of China in an apparent attempt to pressure Canada to release her.
China also sentenced another Canadian, Robert Schellenberg, to death in a sudden retrial of his drug-smuggling case.
When asked if Beijing would handle Schellenberg’s appeal with fairness, Geng Shuang said China is a country ruled by law and drug crimes are serious crimes as in the rest of the world.
“The Chinese judicial departments handle the case completely in accordance with the law,” Geng said.
Also on Monday, China strongly condemned the bombing of a cathedral on a southern Philippine island on Sunday, which killed at least 20 people and injured over 80.
Geng Shuang also expressed condolences to the victims at the news conference.
“We oppose all forms of terrorism, and are willing to cooperate with the Philippines and other parties of the international community to address the threats and challenges of terrorism,” said Geng.
