In nutrition, diet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism. The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management reasons (with the two often being related). Although humans are omnivores, each culture and each person holds some food preferences or some food taboos. This may be due to personal tastes or ethical reasons. Individual dietary choices may be more or less healthy.

Complete nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat-containing food, also food energy in the form of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity.

There are thousands of diets. Some are for losing weight, while others are for gaining weight, lowering cholesterol, living a long and healthful life, and many other reasons.

A diet is best described as a fixed plan of eating and drinking where the type and amount of food are planned out in order to achieve weight loss or follow a particular lifestyle.

Here are some diets that are popular in the community

1. Mediterranean diet
The emphasis is on lots of plant foods, fresh fruits as dessert, beans, nuts, whole grains, seeds, olive oil as the main source of dietary fats. Cheese and yogurts are the main dairy foods. The diet also includes moderate amounts of fish and poultry, up to about four eggs per week, small amounts of red meat, and low to moderate amounts of wine.

2. Raw food diet
The raw food diet, or raw foodism, involves consuming foods and drinks that are not processed, are completely plant-based, and ideally organic.

3. Vegan diet
Veganism is more of a way of life and a philosophy than a diet. A vegan does not eat anything that is animal-based, including eggs, dairy, and honey. Vegans do not usually adopt veganism just for health reasons, but also for environmental, ethical, and compassionate reasons.

4. Vegetarian diet
The majority of vegetarians are lacto-ovo vegetarians, in other words, they do not eat animal-based foods, except for eggs, dairy, and honey.

Studies over the last few years have shown that vegetarians have a lower body weight, suffer less from diseases, and typically have a longer life expectancy than people who eat meat.

5. Ketogenic diet
The ketogenic diet has been used for decades as a treatment for epilepsy and is also being explored for other uses. It involves reducing carbohydrate intake and upping fat intake. It sounds contrary to common sense, but it allows the body to burn fat as a fuel, rather than carbohydrates.

6. Atkins diet
The Atkins diet, or Atkins nutritional approach, focuses on controlling the levels of insulin in the body through a low-carbohydrate diet.

If people consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates, their insulin levels rise and fall rapidly. Rising insulin levels trigger the body to store energy from the food that is consumed, making it less likely that the body will use stored fat as a source of energy.

Therefore, people on the Atkins diet avoid carbohydrates but can eat as much protein and fat as they like.
Although popular for some time, the Atkins Diet comes with certain risks. Individuals considering the Atkins Diet should speak with their doctor.

A healthy diet may improve or maintain optimal health. In developed countries, affluence enables unconstrained caloric intake and possibly inappropriate food choices.

Health agencies recommend that people maintain a normal weight by limiting consumption of energy-dense foods and sugary drinks, eating plant-based food, limiting consumption of red and processed meat, and limiting alcohol intake.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is an evidence-based information source that policy makers and health professionals use to advise the general public about healthy nutrition.

If you’ve hit weight loss plateaus with low carb high fat (lchf) diets like the ketogenic diet, you might be asking yourself if an all meat diet, aka the carnivore diet is good for weight loss.

In this video, Chris Irvin @theketologist and I explain exactly why the carnivore diet plan might be worth trying if you’re struggling with weight loss. We go into the following:
– The relationship between carnivore diet and keto
– Why it’s ok to keep protein high and why you shouldn’t worry about gluconeogenesis
– How the carnivore diet affects your hunger levels and how that helps your weight loss goals
– How standard diets with large variety of foods allow your body to eat more, increasing your calorie consumption
– How cutting out oils on carnivore diet helps you decrease calories
– How to decide if YOU should do carnivore forever
– And more

  1. For the first time in 40 years ( **literally**) I am not fighting hunger. What a **relief!**! This is what normal feels like.I started all carnivore last October and have lost 25 pounds. My blood pressure is again normal, and the swelling in my ankles is **gone**.

  2. Hmmm … must be that “ Body Marvelous” letting you know: wow thanks I’ve got all I need. Hunger receptors are on happy high alert- with that nutrient dense meat.

Personally I still enjoy those nutrient dense leafy greens and other KETO friendly foods. Sometimes I like the all meat- it’s like a whole body cleanse.

    Good video. Great day all.

  3. What if I eat about 4 pounds of meat a day? Including organ meats, fish, fish roe, marrow, etc – nutrient dense meat, BUT it is 4 pounds and I am still extremely hungry, obviously overeating, getting severely bloated. I think it’s more of a craving, not necessarily hunger. And I am keto for at least two months and 0 carb and carnivore for about a month. Do you think it would be something like a binge eating disorder or something? Looking back, I have always felt the need to eat until my belly almost exploded and I am also 125 lbs.

  4. Yall have details on using this way of eating for performance? I know weigh loss is the hot topic, but I'd want to know more about using this way of eating for not only performance but also muscle gain while minimizing fat gain.

  5. My clients that I coach on carnivore do way better when they keep their healthy fat intake above at LEAST 60%. Zero carbs of course. They cant cheat. The fat drops off quickly when they get the fat as highas possible. Butter ghee and heavy cream if you can find them from good sources.
I find the clients who do the best are high fat carnivores not just carnivores… although almost all do better than they did on straight keto.
It's so easy to slip into dirty kero with the pork skins processed meats and fake cheeses and vegetable oils.. not so easy with nose to tail eating on the carnivore diet. I make my clients buy unprocessed or I won't work with them. You cant lose fat on processed meats fats or cheeses. These keto girls out there are selling baloney when they tell them any store bought meat and lose fat. See what I did there? Baloney….

  6. Thank you for this video! I’ve been drawn to carnivore for simplicity and affordability. In my experience i end up gaining weight and not feeling as nourished as when I also include salad and low carb green veg, cold pressed avocado oil. In my experience This plant based group of foods is voluminous/low calorie/carby but also lends me to feeling more nourished; when I’m only eating grass fed burgers, organic eggs and occasional lamb I find I can eat a lot but still feel hungry like I need supplements. I wonder why this is because I’m still drawn to carnivore for simplicity and budgeting I wouldn’t have to buy vegetables. I guess my body is saying no, though? The food I always crave is veggies/salads. But I do have weight to lose and wonder if my headaches and other would improve.

  7. What if I'm 5'6" , 145lbs,faster metabolism and want to reduce my belly fat a bit ? I was told by a doctor "you can't target your belly fat , but you can target your total fat instead outsider surgery"
    Is there truth to this?
I want to transform my fat into muscle. I'd like to be 150lbs but less fat in my stomach area. Would I need to eat lean meat and very little fat?
I'm not fat or overweight at all but I want to sculpt a little bit.
I'm thinking of doing a carnivore like diet( I hate the taste of water. So things like olive oil, honey or Gatorade, tea etc I'd use)

  8. Does the amount of protein you consume in a single meal matter ? i.e. some keto experts suggest no more than 25-30g of protein per meal to prevent gluconeogenesis, mTOR, stress on the kidneys.

  9. While weightloss has stalled a bit bit (Keto from 4/18 & Carnivore 12/18), overall health=IMPROVED! Inlamation: DOWN (rings try to slip off). Joint pain: almost gone. Energy levels: improved. Grocery bill: less. Had been taking 2-4 loperamide hcl per day for years, & NONE since starting carnivore, except when I eat outside Carnivore, e.g., Christmas. Meat on!

  10. Carnivore / Zero Carb has been good for me regarding maintaining new set points after I do a water fast to lose weight. I normally fast for 2-3 days, and eat ZC or Carnivore in the days after, and I gain very little of my pre-fast weight back. Also the high fat and protein is very satisfying.

  11. This is exactly the info I was looking for. Started carni 4 days ago. Came from a mostly meat keto diet and I have completely just lost my appetite.
Before, my mouth used to water just thinking about eating steak, especially ribeye. Now? It makes me feel nauseous just thinking about eating more steak lol. I'm not complaining b/c I am trying to lose weight, it was just such a fast transition from having a HUGE appetite to almost none.

  12. It's crazy I've been a personal trainer since 1997 and two years ago when I started the ketogenic diet my bench press went down and then when I start doing the carnivore diet my bench press not only went back up but it passed what it used to be and I'm feeling buffer than ever
